Questionnaires! From all sides! holy crap

"What makes the sounds of a game brilliant?"

Good game sounds should be interesting and should enhance the overall flavour of the game vis a vie setting, emotion, character etc. They should be in balance with one another and with the score to create a soundscape that is satisfying and also clearly understandable to the player as aural cues.

"What are your strengths and weaknesses in sound composition?"

I am more inclined to improvise than to come up with a complete idea, then execute it according to plan. However this leaves a lot of room for discovery of unique and distinctive sounds, rhythms, melodies and arrangements that are my trademark.

"What game's sound effects and music do you like the most and why?"

I love the sound effects from Quake I. Trent Reznor's visceral noises perfectly communicate the ambience of the game while clearly supporting the events they represent. My favorite video game for music is Omikron: Nomad Soul. David Bowie specifically said that he wanted to go beyond a standard industrial score to create songs that enhanced the emotion and character of the story.

"Who are your favorite musicians and why?"

I have already mentioned two of my most favorite. I like a lot of different music including blues and classical. I have recently taken up the industrial bands KMFDM and Skinny Puppy. All of my favorite artists display virtuosity, variety and innovation.


a. what difference does your organization make or hope to make and for whom does it make this difference; and
b. what results show how successful you are in making this difference (how do you measure your success)?

My 'organization' as it were exists to bring as many people as possible into contact with material which will inspire them and expand their definition of the arts, as well as help them find their unique personal preference for art.

I rarely get an indication of success except on occasions when I am specifically commended or thanked for having inspired someone or put them on a path toward an artist or medium they have grown to love. Then the feedback is overwhelmingly positive. Expressions of success are semantically separate from a person's appreciation of art.

If you receive a Community Gaming Grant, what accountability would show the public that it is being used as it was meant to be used?

I would log my arts-related expenditures and keep a transparent public record. I would also take pains to make sure that my product is of consistently high quality, and that it is being consumed; and if necessary modify my output according to changing demand.

How do current Community Gaming Grant practices help or hinder you?

I have no involvement with the Community Gaming Grant program. However I have heard manifold complaints from established local arts organizations that funds are not distributed fairly, or are being withdrawn, often with SHAMEFULLY LITTLE WARNING or consideration!

What do you think is working well?

Everything that has not become f**ed up due to corrupt bullsh*t.

What could be changed or improved? How?

I believe that gaming revenue is dirty money - that is my personal opinion with which many people may differ. I think that if gaming grants are meant to give back to the public, they need to be distributed fairly and according to artistic merit and community standing, not according to favoritism, politics or 'economic' concern.

How could existing legislation be changed or improved?

I do not think that I am qualified to comment on legislation at this point in time.

How should Community Gaming Grants be used to best serve the people of BC?

In context of the arts: legitimate, non-commercially compromised art must NECESSARILY have a subjective component. Most great works of art appeal to many people; however some will always appear controversial or of 'cult' importance. I think that Community Gaming Grants should be spread evenly over art activities that are popular, and those that are important but less popular. Unfortunately these decisions themselves can be very subjective, which is why it is important to get a wide range of views to properly inform a decision.

What should the role of government be in delivering Community Gaming Grants?

They should allocate and facilitate delivery in a consistent and respectful fashion.

What other comments would you like to make?

British Columbia arts are labouring under a lack of disposable income among patrons and a lack of mid-sized venues.

The outrageous cuts visited on the arts community serve to choke off one of our most productive economic sectors, a sector proven to return greater monies than are invested!

For those who think arts are properly run only for-profit, and that low demand equals low merit: you are doing a disservice to our province's undiscovered talents. It is these artists which will make our future bright as a cultural region with a strong and worthy identity, and attract positive attention and admiration from across the world.
